I have a weeping Japanese Maple tree in my back yard in which there has been a birds next up there for a few years.

My family and I have had the privilege of watching the building of the nest, the laying of the eggs and the life cycle of those three eggs all the way up to the day they were strong enough to take flight.

When those eggs hatch, that mother has to constantly be hunting for food to bring back to the nest and breaks up the food in her mouth and then feeds it to her chicks.  Without her, they are helpless.  They cant even move much for the first week or so.

I correlate those birds to people who are just getting started in business, especially online business.

At first we are helpless and initially looking to get enough nourishment in the beginning of our careers, to move to the next level.  In our case, you should have a mentor.  Someone who can feed you the knowledge to get yourself started on the right foot.

You need to lay a solid foundation before you do anything.  Solid foundations in anything will stand the test of time.  The mother bird doesn’t just drop her eggs anywhere.  She meticulously places each branch and piece of straw together to form the nest in which she is going to lay her eggs.  She built the foundation first.

Over the first month of the chicks life, they are solely dependent.  Over time, they gain enough strength to start flapping their wings.  They do this for about a week, strengthening their wing muscles.

The coolest thing is watching these little birds taking their first leap of faith. Never having flown before, they literally take flight for the first time and make it happen.  There is no test flights as failure is a pretty high drop right to the ground.

One thing I also noticed is that during that week right before the young ones flew off, the mother would show them how to take off for their flight.  She would take off, turn around and come right back, showing her young how its done.  Truley an amazing process to watch.

Now, taking a look at how we learn how to become successful, we take in knowledge and apply that knowledge.  At first we need some tending to.  You may spend more time in the beginning engulfed in learning the basics and being coachable, teachable and trainable.

At some point your going to have to be able to take off on your own and create your own success without having that crutch (your mentor) at your side all of the time.

True leaders have the windburn on their face and lead from the front.  They are not afraid to take calculated risk, knowing that every time they fail, they really succeed.

A lot of people correlate failure to something that is bad.  Failure is the best teacher of success, granted you learn from the mistakes made and move forward.

Network Marketing is not what it was ten years ago.  Quite frankly it’s not what is was five years ago.  I am going to go over the pros and cons of building your business online vs. offline and you can make your own determination of what makes more sense to you.

After doing both, I know the answer.  You will have to make the determination for yourself, but I think once your done, you will see things in a whole new light.

Getting Leads

Offline – You are going to build your list manually through making lists of friends and family, talking to strangers in malls, stores, Barnes and Noble, gas stations, etc. This works awesome if your a type “A” personality. Most people don’t. This takes a lot of time.

Online – Traffic is automatic, once it’s built.  Your going to build your list online through a lead capture page or “squeeze page”.

Connecting With Leads

Offline – You have to physically call every one of your leads.

Online – Your going to use an email auto-responder in which your going to add value to them.  You are also going to call your leads, but by the time you call them, they know who you are and are interested in your offer.  After all, they opted in for more information.  Your not having to bring them up to speed like you would in an offline scenario.  Your system does the sifting and sorting for you so all your left with is a qualified lead.

Business Presentation

Offline – You have to physically show up to show the plan. I personally remember when I first got started in network marketing showing 1 hour plans.  Can you imagine? And I drove all over my state doing it, sometimes out of state. WASTE OF TIME. Why? Because they were not pre-qualified and I was just using the plan as a filter to check their interest.

Online – How about a webinar or video doing the presentation.  How about a PowerPoint presentation or a Bamboo drawing session to explain your business plan online?  You can do it from the comfort of your own home.

Follow Up

Offline – This sometimes can be done on the phone, but most of the time it’s in person. Once again, leaving your home, spending precious time away from your family.

Online – We use email, the phone, Skype and other online communications.

Sign Up

Offline – Traditionally to sign someone up your going to have to give them a number or a specific website to send them to.  You have to guide them through the process.

Online – Your sales funnel will sell almost everything for you if it is set up correctly.  Sign-ups are automatic and there is little effort involved.

Training

Offline – You have to meet weekly in hotels, homes, etc. to do training with your team.

Online – You can automate your training through videos and teleconferences.

Conclusion Offline

Pros: Offline business building in the network marketing industry is more stable and you can create real long term relationships with people.

Cons: Very time intensive and it is limited to what you can do on a daily basis.  It’s solely up to you.

Conclusion Online

Pros: You can reach way more people in a shorter period of time.

Cons: Will dissipate if you don’t build relationships

As you can see, there are pros and cons to both ways of building your network marketing business. There is no right way or wrong way, there is just quick and slow.  With that said, how long do you want to wait to build your business.  Are you on the 6-12 month plan or the 3-5 year plan?

Network Marketing has been around since the beginning of time……..

When you think of the greatest network marketer of all time, who comes to mind? Jim Rohn?  Dexter Yager? Larry Winters or Randy Gage?

For me, it’s got to be Jesus Christ. You may be scratching your head thinking I have gone off my rocker but hold on a sec and let me go deeper.  Jesus walked the earth over 2000 years ago.  His message was the Gospel “The Good News”. That was his product line (per say). He had twelve disciples in which he commanded to go out into the world and spread the word of the Gospel.

Now you catch my drift.  The Gospel spread all over earth and nearly 2/3 of the planet know of him and his teachings.  It all started with the twelve.  The message remains unscathed and the product still pure.  Jesus has the largest down line known to man.

Ok…So now your thinking to yourself, “Josh, what is your freaking point here!”  My point is, he used a system very much like the one really good network marketers use today.  He focused on others before himself.  He focused on educating his students, empowering his students and most of all, loving his students.

These are the three elements that must be present when building a team and a large organization of any kind.

Education: This is what most network marketers want to skip over when they get started.  They want to know how to quickly move product and make money.  Chances are, that thought process changed real quick when people realize that they have no idea how to market.  Learning is the first step in network marketing success.

Today, there is a lot to learn. Most companies teach their “students” to work their warm market. Friends, family and neighbors.  Doesn’t work to well these days.  Savvy network marketers have taken to the Internet to practice their trade because it’s a way bigger pond with way bigger fish. Jesus didn’t have the Internet, but he sure focused on educating his disciples on the word of god.  Now evangelism is all over the Internet.  Kingdom Connection is a great example. As time changes, so do the ways in which we distribute information.

Empowerment: Empowering your team is one of the most important pieces of the puzzle in network marketing.  It’s not what you can do, it’s what you can duplicate.  Jesus handed over his power to his disciples and told them to go out and feed the hungry and heal the sick.  Today, if we empower people, all we will have are followers.  The goal is to have those followers become leaders.  Give them the tools they need to succeed and set them loose.  Sure some will need more nurturing than others, but it is empowerment that will build long term success and stability in your business.

Love: One of Jesus’s greatest commandments is to love your neighbor as you love yourself and of all things, love is the greatest.  Love is the glue that holds organizations together through thick and thin.  You have to love people folks.  If it’s all about you, you won’t have people hanging around for long.  Get personal with people on your team.  Help them get what they want.  Love on them.  Give them attention and let them know how much you appreciate them.  The leaders who do this have what they have because they have taken the time to care for others.  Be selfless in your journey.

Network marketing is not just about making money, it’s about people and changing lives.  Sure there are always going to be those that take advantage of the system, but it will be short lived.  This is a relational industry and without education, empowerment and love, the glue loosens and wheels begin to spin.

In today’s world there are all types of network markter’s out there.  Here are a few I came up with………

The Wanna-Be Network Marketer

Ever hear of the term fake it until you make it?  These are network marketers that try to impress you by making outlandish income claims and trying to make you think that they have made it financially.  I see it all over the place on the web but can read right through those people.

It’s real easy to pick them out of the crowd-simply google them.  It is amazing what you can find out about people when you query the search engines.

The Shouting Network Marketer

This is a category that a shit-ton of network marketers fall into.  The internet is filled with noise and people knocking others down thinking its going to make them look like the king.  Big time no no and we know who you are.  These guys and gals actions speak so loudly we cant hear what they are saying.

They are known for spamming and blatantly pitching their business opportunities all over the web in places you wouldn’t dream of seeing a business opportunity.  They crowd twitter, myspace, facebook and many other web 2.0 sites.  Most of the time they are shunned.  No one likes a shouter.

The Newbie Network Marketer

Newbies are cool because they are hungry to learn more.  They are wide open vessels.  There are really two types of Newbies.

1. This infant networker goes out and keeps purchasing course after course hoping it is their next ticket to wealth.  Problem is, they realize it takes a whole lot of time to go through these courses and learn the info, let alone implement.  They get so overwhelmed that they freeze up and end up frustrated and confused.

2. This networker chooses his/her course of action carefully.  They mastermind with people who are where they want to be and purchase one relevant course at a time to learn and master the skill set.  They don’t purchase another one until they have gotten results from implementing the knowledge they learned from the course.

The Clueless Network Marketer -  This is going to be short and sweet.  These guys and gals just throw crap at the internet and the world around them, hoping something will stick.  It’s a short term strategy and never works so please STOP IT!

The Savvy Network Marketer

These are the guys and gals I love to see succeed. They have done their homework, invested time, effort and money into their marketing plans and are attacking their futures with everything they have.  They know where they are going and how they are going to get there.  They know their conversion rates, budget, time commitments, etc.

Savvy Networker’s know where to find their audience and how to relate to them.  They are problem solvers and solution finders.  These marketers are always seeking wisdom and guidance from the movers and shakers in the industry.

All successful network marketers and business minded people use tools, otherwise known as systems to assist them in running their business.

Ten years ago, I knew nothing about Network Marketing Tools or Network Marketing business systems. All I knew about was the hotel business and the systems that I used to run my hotel. Accounting systems, inventory systems, reservation systems and payroll systems.

You see business runs on systems and without them, you are back to journals and a huge room filled with file cabinets to store and track information.

What separates the successful network marketer are the tools he or she uses for their trade. I love to use automation tools. Anytime I can take the human error out of what I am doing, I do it and so should you.

Most network marketers are great at networking, I have to give them that. The part that they miss is the marketing aspect. Without marketing, you have no business. If you dont believe me, have someone drop ship 10,000 Books in your driveway.  How would you get rid of them and turn a profit?  You need to penetrate your market.

In the past it was all about calling on everyone you knew and have to explain to them your business model and what is in it for them.  97% of folks in the industry still use this method. Why? Because it’s been done for so long and many have had success using it.

I, unfortunately was not one of those people. So what did I do about it? I went in search of a systems that could do the work for me. Today its using the power of the internet, social media and savvy internet advertising.

I rely on tools to distribute my content, Google, Yahoo and Bing’s Pay Per Click Search Engine Advertising and some really cool video syndication programs to market with.  If you combine all of these, you end up with a POWERHOUSE marketing system.

Once you learn how to market online and implement systems into your business, you are now leveraging your time and resources to your benefit.  It frees up your time to spend it on the things that actually produce revenue and there are only two of them in the Network Marketing Business.  The two are marketing and talking to people, period.

If your leaving your success in the industry to chance, don’t. Your not going to all of the sudden just wake up with a fist full of cash and a bank account yielding seven zero’s.
