Over the past century two professions have yielded the largest paychecks; The medical profession and the direct sales industry.  A big difference in the two is that in the medical profession, you may go through 8+ years of schooling, back-ended with a pile of loans vs. having minimal formal education in the sales industry.

The Consumer Packaged Goods or (CPG) market is where products like toys, beverages and household items are sold through supermarkets.  A CPG sales director places the products nationally via a network.  To even become a junior sales person in this career path, you need an MBA.  Also in this position, you are very involved in the business, not just selling the product.

Software Sales

Base Salary: $80,000 to $100,000
Commissions: $250,000 to $1 million

Successful software sales people are some of the highest paid folks in the industry.  They not only know how to sell, they also know how to lead with a consultative approach.

This is a very aggressive position and not for just anyone, however, for those who venture into software sales, it can be very lucrative.

Top Tier Direct Sales

Base Salary – $0

Commissions: $250,000 – Unlimited

The Top Tier Direct Sales industry pays no base salary and is reserved for the true entrepreneur.  In fact you have to pay to get into a top tier program and the buy in is usually in the $20K range.

While a lot of people don’t really understand the industry, those that do make a whole lot of money doing it.  It’s not for everyone as you have to be very disciplined when working for 100% commission, however, the lifestyle it provides to the top producers smokes any Senior level sales position in the world.

Clearly the benefits of the direct sales industry outweigh the traditional “Job”.  It is reserved for the “go-getters” and “the movers and shakers”.  Some of the most talented people in the sales industry are in direct sales and once they get a taste of the rewards, they never go back to conventional jobs.
