5 Biggest Social Media Marketing Mistakes

    Social Media Marketing Mistakes

    Social Media Marketing Mistakes

We all are guilty of these 5 no no’s when it comes to social media marketing.  There is a right way to do it and a very wrong way.  These 5 areas are crucial to your social media success or failure.

Social Media Marketing Mistake #1 – Pitching or Selling Your Product, Service or Business.

The social networks are a place to develop relationships with people, not to pitch your business.  The biggest mistake I see people doing, especially on Facebook is presenting their product or service thinking that they are delivering value.  That’s totally wrong.

If you want to attract people to you, you have to be willing to give away your best content on the front end.  Let people decide if they want to take a deeper look at what you have to offer.  By shoving your business down their throats with your posts and links, you are just turning people off.  Trust me, I made this mistake and it takes a long time to recover from it.

Social Media Marketing Mistake #2 – Not Having a Blog.

A blog is ultra important in today’s atmosphere on the web.  It is your home base.  It’s what delivers credibility to people who are doing their homework on you.  If you don’t have one, your missing out on traffic and relationship building.

A blog is yours. You have full control of the content it delivers to the web.  Your content is then ranked in the search engines according to your keywords and tags used in your posts.  This makes it easy to tap into niche’s where your prospects are searching for information.

The bottom line is, if you don’t have your own personal blog that is professionally done, you won’t be taken seriously online.  While some may disagree with that statement, I stand by my guns on this one.

Social Media Marketing Mistake #3 – Not Being Consistent With Giving Good Content.

If you are one of those people that just log on to your social media sites to check if anyone has sent you a message, your not developing relationships or delivering value.

You should be updating your social networks on a daily basis and sharing your blog posts and other valuable content on your networks.  Be very consistent and persistent with your efforts and watch your network grow.

Social Media Marketing Mistake #4 – Not Growing a Targeted Following.

There are tons of people on Twitter with tens of thousands of followers as well as a whole lot on Facebook with thousands of “supposed” friends.  Uneducated social butterflies think that the higher the number of followers and friends, the better.  Numbers don’t mean JACK if they are not highly targeted.

If you have a bunch of followers that are interested in learning more about healthy living and your tweets or updates are all based on network marketing or MLM, your going to have your following running the other way.

Having a very targeted list is highly important and by doing so, you will attract those people to you when you post relevant, high value content.

Social Media Marketing Mistake #5 – Wasting Time With Ineffective methods. i.e. No Strategy

If your one of those folks that doesn’t have a social media strategy in place and wastes time on Farmville, don’t wonder why you’re not getting the results your expecting.

You need to have a blueprint of what your process is and have some goals in place as to what you want your end result to be from your marketing efforts.  There is a ton of information available for free on the web as to how to properly tap into the social networks and achieve success.

Feel free to check out a recent post of mine titled: “5 Steps for Social Media Success in Your Business No Matter What Business You are in.” This was the first part of this two part series here.

Don’t be afraid of making mistakes. Failure is the teacher of success as long as you fail, adjust and keep moving forward.

Just to recap what we have discussed here.  Stop pitching and selling, get yourself a WordPress, self hosted blog, be consistent with giving good content, grow a targeted following and have a strategy.
